Building Leadership Teams After Funding

A funding event — whether a Series B, a growth equity round, or a PE acquisition — creates an immediate and often underestimated leadership challenge. The capital is intended to accelerate growth, but growth requires leadership that the current team may not have. The sequence and quality of post-funding executive hires often determines whether the capital achieves its intended return.

The First Three Hires

The first three executive hires after a funding event set the trajectory. Typically, these are a commercial leader (CRO or VP Sales), a product or technology leader (CTO or VP Product), and an operational leader (COO or VP Operations). Getting any of these wrong does not just delay growth — it wastes the runway that the funding was meant to extend.

The Thin Market Problem

Post-funding companies face a specific thin-market problem: they need executives who have scaled from their current stage to the next — and that specific experience is rare. A leader who has taken a company from $10M to $50M is not the same as one who has taken it from $50M to $150M. Identifying leaders with the exact scaling experience required is a market mapping exercise, not a job posting.

Sequencing Matters

The sequence of post-funding hires matters as much as the quality. Hiring a CRO before the product is ready wastes the commercial leader's first six months. Hiring a COO before the commercial leader is in place can create organizational friction. The sequence should be governed by the business strategy, not by which role feels most urgent.
