Hiring for Clinical AI Leadership

Executive Search Insights
Clinical AI is one of the most constrained executive talent markets in any industry. The leadership requirements sit at the intersection of three domains — clinical practice, machine learning, and regulatory navigation — and the number of executives who are credible in all three is remarkably small. For many Clinical AI leadership roles, the intersection of these requirements creates a highly specialized market that significantly narrows the viable candidate pool.
The Credibility Triangle
A Clinical AI leader must be credible to three audiences. Clinicians need to trust that the leader understands clinical workflows and patient impact. ML engineers need to trust that the leader understands model development, validation, and deployment. Regulators need to trust that the leader understands FDA pathways, clinical evidence requirements, and post-market surveillance. Finding a leader who is credible to all three is the core challenge.
Where These Leaders Are
The viable candidates are not in any single place. Some are MDs who have moved into ML leadership roles. Some are ML leaders who have spent years in clinical environments. Some are product leaders who have navigated clinical AI through FDA clearance. They are almost universally employed, well-compensated, and not actively looking.
The Search Approach
Hiring for Clinical AI leadership requires a market map of the intersection — not a search for candidates who have applied to clinical AI roles. The map must identify relevant candidates across clinician-engineers, ML leaders with healthcare experience, and product leaders with clinical AI regulatory experience. From that map, direct outreach can begin.
